Intro

Congratulations to all who were selected to participate in dA’s first ever Lyoko ACC battle. The reason why you were chosen was because I saw great promise in your characters either through story, drawing ability and other factors. It goes without saying that as a selected participant, I expect you all to commit to the overall success of the tournament as a whole as I will demand such things from myself and the judges. As the tournament coordinator, I promise you all that I will run a fair and fun battle and if you have any questions or concerns with anything that’s going on, please feel free to message me.

Also as a small favor to the judges and your fellow opponents I ask all those selected to go back into their character’s profiles and bold all the different sub sections of their entry that way it’s easier for us to reference them in the future. What I mean by this is in your profiles that look like this

Judging Criteria

Keep in mind that this is an art battle, so artistic skill will heavily play a role in your victory. However, given that this is an ACC battle, raw artistic abilities will not be the sole factor we’re looking for. Let us understand and love your character while you respect the personality and history of your opponents. Please take the time to understand the material your opponent has provided as they will do the same then show us what would happen if such people actually fought it out on Lyoko.

How an ACC Battle Works

As stated in my first detailed journal post, the format for this ACC battle is heavily influenced by the one Endling is currently holing. For those of you who have yet to be exposed to this wonderful event allow me to explain the process to you once more.

Once you find out who your opponent is, then you draw what would happen if your two characters faced off, with your character winning obviously. There are multiple ways to represent your fight, here are the ones most commonly used.

Single Action Picture: Think a comic book drawing that spreads across both pages or a really good screen cap from your favorite movie. Artists will draw the final moment in the battle that shows their opponents demise such as them putting a sword through their chest or the point of impact of a good roundhouse kick. The main advantage to these type of drawings is that they’re the “easiest” to do and only require the artist to draw only one detailed picture. However these sort of entries tend to lose a majority of the time on account they really don’t give a reader a good impression of the characters. Sure it might look nice but if we don’t walk away from the experience liking any of the ACCs involved then is it really a winning entry?

Manga Pages: The most popular and one of the most difficult to complete. The process is pretty self-explanatory. Instead of just drawing one image the artists draws several panels of their fight. One of the reasons why these type of entries are so commonly used is they allow someone to actually make a complete story. Fights can be built up, histories can be explored and personalities are fully expressed. Of course this takes a lot of work as well as one has to account for pacing and individual panel size. However, if great care is taken then a truly wonderful entry will emerge.

Flash Animation: The big daddy of the three. No longer is the fight expressed through still picturers but instead we see everything in moving glory. Aside from drawing ability, the artist has to now keep in mind fluid movements, use of background sound effects and voices if needed. Such an endeavor is not for the faint of heart.

Now that we got that explanation out of the way, let the games begin!

Battle Zero: Prelude to the Storm

Prologue

Now I know you’re all wondering where’s the match up sheet, allow me to tell you that there is none. You see folks, for the first outing of the Lyoko ACC battle, I’ve imposed a two week cease fire. Instead of getting to the clobbering we’re going to use this moment as a chance for all of you to get a nice warm up to flex your artistic muscles. Above is the link to the prologue to the actual fight that will serve as the backdrop to what’s happening. As it states in the chapter, there will be a one-hour wait before the actual fights are announced. Essentially you now have an opportunity to portray what your character is doing during this wait.

Obviously the first question on your minds is “What’s the point?” in which I say that is a very rational thing to ask. Seeing how I just announced those who were chosen to made it through the audition process, I thought that by giving you a two week period to prepare is quiet a fair break for you. No that you know you are chosen, you can make the necessary adjustments need in order to get yourself ready for the actual fighting.

For those of you who wish to practice drawing your opponents characters or who want to start laying down the foundation for their own character’s story, now is the perfect chance. You can draw them talking to their opponents in some mindless chit-chat, show how they’re reacting to the news Jeremie just told everyone or have them silently psyching themselves up for the challenge. Regarding these sort of entries, during this time only I will say that they do not have to be drawn and participation during this period is completely optional. but keep in mind that your involvement during this phase is for your own benefit. Like I said before, its important for the audience to get a good understanding of your character and their own inner struggles and showing how they feel and how they interact with others before the tournament is a step in the right direction. The only downside to this is that there are a few ACCs out there who do not have a reference of their character on Earth. If you wish to portray these particular character, please contact the artist in question to work something out.

How to Submit an entry

As always if you have a submission for the prologue portion of the battle please inform me when it completed and it will be posted in this journal entry. I’m here to answer and questions you have.
